Teen boys arrested on suspicion of ‘attempted murder’ after street stabbing

The stabbing is believed to have happened around Abingdon Avenue, Whitefield at around 5pm on Thursday March 28 and left an 18-year-old man with a serious injury to his arm.

Police now say that they have arrested tow 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident.

Detective Inspector Charlotte Whalley of GMP’s Major Investigation Team said; “Our ongoing work and determination to bring those responsible to justice is continuing at pace.

“Involving GMP’s specialised units and resources, we have managed to track down three more suspects we believe are linked to this incident, as we try to understand fully the circumstances.

“At the centre of this is a victim and a family suffering immense anguish and they are being kept up-to-date with the progress in this investigation.”

Emergency services were called to the area around Abingdon Avenue just after 5pm on Thursday March 28.

The 18 year alleged victim collapsed at the scene and was taken to intensive care in hospital in a critical condition.

The incident is believed to have begun on nearby Sawley Street.

A 49-year-old man and an 18-year-old man have both previously been arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

The 18-year-old, Charlie Harrison of Mather Avenue, has now been charged with affray and possession of an offensive weapon and has been remanded to prison.

The 49-year-old man has been bailed with what police are calling “strict conditions.”

Police have also arrested 16-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted murder, but he has now been released with no further action.

A 33-year-old man was then later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has released on police bail.

A police investigation is still ongoing.

Detective Inspector Whalley said: “If anyone has information or detail that may help us in our enquiries, they are asked to get in touch, in confidence, by ringing 101 quoting incident 2566 of 28/03/2024.

“Alternatively, details can be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
